The Hidden Benefits of a Kitchen Renovation

Shaunie Wheeler

It’s no secret that a beautiful kitchen can help increase your property value, but what if you aren’t looking to sell? Apart from aesthetics, and perhaps a bit more storage here and there, is it really worth paying out thousands for? Well, the short answer is: yes. But we’d like to dive in a bit deeper to really explore how a better kitchen can give you a better life (putting aside the extra couple of thousand it could increase your property value by, of course).

three young children baking a cake in the kitchen, smiling and dusting their floury hands.

As a child, I remember my grandmother teaching me how to grate a carrot and warning me about the dangers of cutting myself before I inevitably caught the tip of a finger on a blade (after which, I proceeded to stare at her in horror thinking “How could you let me do this?!”). I have fond memories of my mother letting me lick the whisk and scrape the bowl to see me through until the cake was baked. Its where, as an adult, I have had some of the most profound realisations. Conversations, debates and ideas have all taken place over the kitchen counter, usually in the middle of cooking dinner. I have consoled and been consoled in the kitchen, over a cup of tea, sometimes over a cocktail. I think you get the point. The kitchen is the gathering place for family and friends, it’s where memories are made. My partner, on the other hand, repeatedly reminds me of how hideous his mother’s kitchen was when he was growing up, and how he would hate having his friends over because of it. He thinks it’s one of the main reasons he decided to move out of his childhood home at a young age: the sheer horror of the kitchen made him do it.

I may be over exaggerating just a touch, granted, but the point I’m trying to make is that he doesn’t share the same fond memories of time spent in the kitchen as I have. Renovating your kitchen gives you the opportunity to really transform one of the most important spaces in your home for you and your family. Read on to discover the hidden benefits of renovating your kitchen and why 2025 is the year your home becomes one for the books.

A beautiful wooden kitchen with handle-less cabinetry creating a sophisticated design. A statement pendant hangs from the ceiling. A matching wooden dining table has a blue vaseon it with flowers in.

Improve the functionality and flow. If you haven’t already taken the hint, a poorly designed kitchen can hinder your child’s growth and social development. Okay, all jokes aside, functionality and flow are at the top of the list of reasons to renovate your kitchen. You could completely change the layout of your kitchen for the ultimate transformation, or it might only need bigger and better cabinetry (walk-in pantry anyone?). You can create a space where everything is within reach, where you no longer have to juggle multiple appliances on a small countertop, where every nook and cranny is carefully considered. You CAN design your kitchen around you, who knew?

Enhance the economic efficiency.  As guests of this beautiful world, it would be rude of us to ignore its polite requests to be gentle with it. If we can, we should opt for energy-efficient solutions throughout the home. The kitchen is the hardest working room in a house, so ensuring you have the most energy efficient appliances, lighting and insulation is the best way to catapult your home into a money-saving, planet-saving haven. These subtle changes have the biggest impact but are often overlooked when it comes down to the finer details of renovating your kitchen, so make sure you explore energy-smart solutions with your chosen renovation company (cough, cough). Make it personal.

Remember that hideous kitchen I mentioned right at the start? Well, turns out that once upon a time, orange cupboards, green floors and flowers-in-vases-printed-on-tiles was all the rage. However, that was in 1970. What was once a desirable, aesthetically pleasing kitchen, had become a dull and ragged memory of a time long ago. Broken in places, ill-fitted and poorly designed in others, but more importantly, my mother-in-laws taste had changed – even she no longer liked being in it. Fast forward to 2020 and she was able to put her stamp on the place once again. Marble worktops, tiled splashbacks, cupboards and a pantry were all meticulously thought about and designed to incorporate her space, taste, wants, needs and desires. Character was present once more. The home felt loved again. Improve your happiness. A kitchen that encourages cooking, entertaining and family gatherings is a happy kitchen indeed. And even if you aren’t one for hosting, a kitchen that is easy to clean and maintain gives you more time to focus on the meaningful and important things that bring you happiness. Not only that, but a functional and organised space reduces stress, increases productivity and will improve your happiness (note: last point was not fact checked).
